A big announcement and a giveaway from your Curators!

Dear curious and lovely readers,

We, the Curators, thank you for exploring the Cabinet with us, reading about cake and tricks and not worrying when the tables sprout legs and run away. The tour through our collection of Curiosities is by no means over; in fact, it is just beginning.

We're delighted to announce that the objects you've found here will soon be collected into a very different object--that is, a book--which you'll be able to hold yourselves. An anthology of these short fictions for the young and mischievous is coming from Greenwillow Books in Summer 2014. Between its covers you will not only find the stories that have been, and will continue to be, placed here, but also brand new ones, plus observations and all manner of wickedness from the four of us.

Fret not, this ethereal Cabinet remains open for business, though we will soon be moving to a new and bigger home, with no interruption to our regular weekly offerings. Indeed, we are more determined than ever to bring you a wide variety of tales unearthed and rooms thrust into the light of day.

And if you'll permit us a personal note, we would also like to profess our limitless gratitude to the honorary, silent Curators who stand behind us, ghostly and determined. Our agents, Sara Megibow, David Dunton, Diana Fox, and Brooks Sherman, and most particularly the brilliant Virginia Duncan, our new collective editor, for wanting to throw open the Cabinet doors even wider.

We'll see you for the next story--truly, we will see you, the walls have eyes--and thank you, again, for your patronage.

The Curators (Stefan Bachmann, Katherine Catmull, Claire Legrand, and Emma Trevayne)

To celebrate this fantabulous news, we are having a giveaway--our first, but unlikely to be the last. Up for collection are four pairs of books, one from each Curator. One book shall be the Curator's own, the other...who may know? An old, spooky favorite? A much-sought-after advance copy of something new? Only time will tell and this is, after all, a place of mysteries. Enter via the Rafflecopter link in the next seven days, and four winners will be chosen at random. (Giveaway is international, please enter from wherever you are!)

  1. This is great news! I'd been secretly hoping and wondering if these stories would be bound into a book. <3 Anyway, my favorite scary story is Stephen King's short, Crouch End, but my favorite middle grade book is the Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark collection. It terrified me as a child, and STILL scares me now.

  2. Most excellent news! Really looking forward to the book.

One middle grade novel that I've read recently and really loved was Frances Hardinge's "Verdigris Deep".

My favorite book of all times is Harry Potter. It's not (very) scary, but I love it and haven't stopped rereading the series since 2000 :)

My favorite Middle Grade book? Gosh, there are so many. Well, one of my more recent favorites is The Cats of Tanglewood Forest by Charles de Lint and Charles Vess. Beautiful illustrations and a fantastic story. :)

  15. I used to have a collection of ghost stories as a kid that I would read and read again. It always gave me nightmares. I've sadly misplaced it.

  19. Yesssss! Thrilling news. I can't wait.

  20. Ummmm...is it too sucking-up-ish to say Cavendish? It's certainly the creepiest thing I've read in recent memory and it was so, so delightful (because I equate "delight" with "books that have creepy beetles all through them", apparently.) I'm also a big fan of Cat Valente's MG, so I'm happy to see it getting some love from the other commenters. And of course, gotta love the granddaddy of delightfully creepy, Roald Dahl (thanks to the middle school English teacher who read his adult stories to our class!)

Anyway, congrats on the anthology! Can't wait!

  21. I don't really read that many scary books to be honest! But my favourite middle grade series is probably Percy Jackson!
Thanks for the giveaway! The anthology sounds really interesting :)

  22. My favourite middle grade book? I assume middle grade is primary/secondary school for us...my favourite was Emily of new moon by l.m.montgomery

  23. I don't have a favorite scary book - unless manga counts? Then my answer would be Shingeki no Kyojin (Attack on Titans). The giants in the story are truly creeptastic.

  24. Congratulations! I am so excited for you all. I grew up loving Joan Aiken's short stories and the way they mixed the strange and the ordinary, finding the magical in the everyday, cracking open possibilities. I want my kids to grow up to love the form, so it's great to be able to put good short stories into their hands.

  27. Hello! -waves- Umm, I don't read a lot of 'scary' books, but I used to read a monthly anthology of supposedly real horror stories.

  28. My favorite scary books are The Graveyard Book and Doll Bones.

I just finished Doll Bones and it freaked me out a little :)

  29. Yay so exciting! Congrats! I don't think I have a favorite scary book, but a good middle grade one is A Tale Dark & Grimm or The Cavendish Home for Boys and Girls : )

  32. Hello! *waves hand enthusiastically* The only scary book that I've read is Anna Dressed in Blood by Kendare Blake. I really am not much into scary books since I easily get scared and I have a trouble of sleeping when I do read scary stuff so I tend to avoid those kind of books.

  33. I don't know if I can pick a favorite scary story, but Stephen King is one of my favorite authors (although probably not for middle graders!) It's my favorite genre:) Can't wait to get this book!

  34. I'm using these stories with my senior English class today! They are especially loving "Red Shoes and Doll Parts"!!!

  35. Having seniors, it is hard to get them to focus on anything this time of year, but they are all reading and totally loving it. It hasn't been silent in here for a while, but they love the stories on this blog!

  36. This story blog is way too awesome NOT to end up on my shelf. I'm so happy for you four. Congratulations!

  38. The Graveyard Book is a popular scary tale in our house, but we've also enjoyed Skulduggery Pleasant, which has a lot of humour in it too.
